Why bigger isn't better: what MAD Festival taught us about oversizing
At MAD Festival in Antwerp, we measured how much power the festival actually used. What we found is something we see at almost every event: oversizing.
What is oversizing?
Oversizing means installing far more generator capacity than you need. It feels safe, but a large generator powering a small demand runs close to idle. That means wasted diesel, higher rental costs, engine wear and more emissions.
What we saw at MAD
Even at the busiest moment, demand on the main generators stayed far below what they could deliver. With smaller generators and the same safety, MAD could cut its diesel use by more than a third.
We also found an unused opportunity: combined with a battery, almost all of the generator load could run on the site's existing grid connection.
