How does a stage V generator work
LEARNINGS

Why Stage V generators need the right load
More and more festivals and construction sites run on Stage V generators, the cleanest diesel generators on the market. But to stay clean, they need to be used the right way.
What is Stage V?
Stage V is the strictest EU emission standard for mobile generators. Each new generator must meet it. To keep emissions low, Stage V machines have a particle filter that captures fine particles from the exhaust.
Why load matters
That filter cleans itself by burning off the fine particles, but only when the exhaust is hot enough. And the exhaust only gets hot enough when the generator runs at a healthy load, usually above 30%.
When a Stage V generator is oversized and runs close to idle:
The filter clogs, because the exhaust never gets hot enough
Extra fuel is burned to force the filter clean
The generator can lose power or shut down when the filter is full
The engine wears faster because of unburned fuel (known as wet stacking)
So a clean generator that is too big can end up wasting fuel and causing breakdowns.
Better together: Stage V + battery
A Stage V generator works best combined with a battery. The battery handles the quiet hours and low demand. When the battery needs charging, the generator runs at its optimal load. When the battery is full, the generator switches off.
The result: the generator only runs when it's working efficiently, the filter stays clean and fewer hours of diesel are burned.
